What is laser hair removal and how does it work?

Laser Hair Removal is a faster and gentler way to remove unwanted hair, with permanent results. Using leading technologies GentleLASE® and GentleYAG by Candela, precise and controlled pulses of light based energy are applied to target the hair follicles lying beneath the skin’s surface. Emitting a gentle beam of light, the laser energy is absorbed and transformed into heat, destroying the hair follicle and leaving surrounding skin unaffected. The GentleLASE® features Alexandrite lasers which are effective in targeting both coarse and finer hair. The GentleYAG by Candela specializes in treating all skin types particularly dark or African American skin tones. It also offers unmatched treatment capabilities in wrinkle reduction and skin tightening procedures. The system features patented Cryogen cooling system that delivers fine mists between pulses to minimize pain, protect skin, and enable laser energy to gently reach and effectively treat hair follicles. This process delivers maximum results with minimal discomfort.

Why laser hair removal?

Unlike conventional hair removal methods such as shaving, waxing or depilatories that are time-consuming and only provide short term results, Laser Hair Removal is quick, safe and effective. Employing the world’s most advanced and powerful laser technology, The GentleLASE® and GentleYAG by Candela, to provide long term results with significant hair reduction of up to 85% to 90% after six treatments. It permanently reduces ingrown hair in all skin types, and, it’s FDA approved.

How should I prepare for a laser treatment?

Laser hair removal is more than just ”zapping” unwanted hair. It is a procedure that requires extensive training to perform and carries potential risks. While our staff of technicians are fully equipped to handle any concerns, we ask that you follow proper laser hair removal preparation procedures to ensure the best treatment possible.

  • Do not wax, epilate, or remove hair with the root using any other hair removal method for at least 4 weeks prior to the first session and throughout the course of treatments. Hair follicle needs to be intact in order to be targeted by our laser devices which target the pigment in hair.
  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning, or products such as tinted moisturizers 2 weeks prior to and after treatment. These will all cause treatments to be less effective and make complications after treatments more likely.
  • Please shave one day prior to treatment- stubble is fine. Shaving more than one day prior to may result in less effective and more uncomfortable treatments.
  • Please do not wear makeup to your session for facial hair removal procedure. All traces of makeup must be removed in order to avoid any type of damage from the lasers.
  • Inform us if you are currently on the medication Accutane or have been in the last 6 months. This can make your skin more susceptible to damage from the laser.
  • Please do not use any retinol products one week prior to your appointment if you are receiving hair removal on your face. This can make your skin more susceptible to damage from the laser.
  • For clients who are on antibiotics, please allow two weeks from the last day of your medication to come in for an appointment. Many of these medications can make you photosensitive and susceptible to damage from the lasers.
Generally it is best to wait 4-6 weeks between treatments. Your laser specialist will help determine how often you should come in based on progress.

What should I expect during a laser hair removal session?

The laser equipment will be adjusted according to the color, thickness, and location of the hair being treated as well as your skin color. Based on these elements, cooling systems will also be adjusted to provide less discomfort. Next, your technician will emit a pulse of light to the treatment area, assessing the settings as well as monitoring for bad reactions. Given the settings are best for your treatment, the technician will proceed with the session and will check in with you as needed. When the procedure is completed, anti-inflammatory creams or lotions will be provided to ease any discomfort. Again, we recommend scheduling followup treatments four to six weeks later and continuing treatments until hair growth has stopped.

How many laser hair treatments will I need and how far apart should they be scheduled?

Since various hairs will enter their growth cycle at different times, approximately 6 treatments at intervals of 4-8 weeks are necessary to disable most of the follicles in a given area. Treated areas such as the face usually require more frequent treatments whereas legs and back require less.

laser pigmentation removal

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of an area of the skin caused by the overproduction of melanin, a pigment that gives color to human hair, skin and eyes. Because melanin lives in the outermost layer of the skin, by nature, dark-skinned people have more melanin and pigment than those of light skin tone. Melanin also serves as the body’s natural sun protectant. When skin is exposed to long-term UV rays, melanocytes are triggered to produce more melanin. Essentially, a “tan” is the skin working to protect itself, yet this UV exposure often causes hidden damage that can surface years later, in the form of splotchy patches of hyperpigmentation, ones we often refer to as age spots, sun spots or freckles.

How can I correct it?

Fortunately, hyperpigmentation by any cause is a benign condition; however, it can be very frustrating for men and women alike. For women, makeup has often provided some coverage. Yet, there are far more effective and lasting ways to reduce and remove the effects of too much melanin. From least to most aggressive, treatments for hyperpigmentation include:

  • Topical Suppressants: Hydroquinone and kojic acid calm the melanocytes that cause dark spots. They are frequently recommended prior to treatment with laser or light therapies.
  • Microdermabrasion: Microdermabrasion stimulates new skin growth by exfoliating the outer layers with a combination of suction and our diamond tip wand.
  • Chemical Peels: Peels help stimulate the growth of newer, healthy skin by stripping away outer layers and dead skin cells.
  • Laser: Laser treatments work to send deep pulses of light energy to the affected areas of the skin, resulting in pigmented lesions breaking up and becoming naturally absorbed in the body.

How does the laser work with pigmentation?

The melanin present in the pigmented cells absorbs the laser energy resulting in the breakdown of pigmented lesions and a lighter, paler skin tone and cells that blend more naturally into their surrounding areas. The surrounding skin itself will not be affected.

How many treatments will I need?

Approximately 3-6 treatments are required depending on the pigmented area, scheduling one treatment every 4 weeks.

laser facial

How does it work?

Surface and topical products simply cannot induce collagen formation for the true tightening of sagging or drooping skin the way that laser treatments can. While some products may give the appearance of tightening, truly efficient treatment can only occur when a laser reaches the collagen-rich dermal layer and creates subsurface heat. The GentleYAG “tightens” by heating the underlying layers in the skin and forming new collagen, resulting in smoother, younger-looking skin. Once collagen in the skin is heated above 60 degrees centigrade, it will contract and tighten the aging collagen strands which are looser and sparser than “young” collagen. Treatment causes an immediate tightening and improved tone and texture. New collagen growth continues over the course of four to six months post treatment. The face and neck are the most popular area for this treatment however batwing-like underarm areas and targeted skin conditions like stretch marks are also treatable.

Is skin tightening painful?

While it may be quite different than a traditional relaxing facial most would agree that the treatment is not painful. The goal of our Candela Laser Skin Tightening Facial is to gradually build heat in the skin to trigger a jump start of collagen production. Overall it feels like a warming airbrush effect with certain sensitive areas of the face warming a little more quickly than others.

How many treatments are needed?

Although you will notice an improvement with just one treatment, at Deify we recommend a minimum of four treatments for significant results. The number of treatments loosely follows the general rule of one treatment for every decade of life. Ready? Set? Count those decades!

How long do treatments take?

Treatments typically take about 30 minutes for each area.

How will my skin look right after skin tightening?

Immediately after treatment a patients’ skin is expected to be red and in some cases tighter than usual for approximately two days. Mild swelling is also normal. After the first two days, patients can expect light peeling and if targeted area is the face, mild lip dryness. Most patients can apply makeup later that day or the following day. The downtime is very minimal.

When will I see results?

Some clients have reported seeing results in just a few days after treatment; however, optimum results are seen anywhere between 4-6 months after the treatment. If recommended by a specialist, a 2nd or 3rd treatment may be scheduled approximately 2 to 3 weeks apart.

How much does it cost compared to other treatments?

Treatments are about half the cost of Thermage and thousands of dollars less than a surgical face lift. What’s better than tighter skin and dinner with a friend to celebrate?!
